5 Ways to Cut Sugar

Five Ways to Cut Back On Sugar

    •    Beware of condiments.  Many sauces and condiments are loaded with sugar (that means calories).  Barbecue sauce is a big one.       And ketchup sometimes contains high fructose corn syrup.  Ketchup is available without corn syrup.  Look at an all-natural grocer.
    •    Beverages. Eliminate soda, energy drinks, sports drinks AND fruit juices.  Fruit juices are loaded with sugar and calories yet lack the benefits you get from fruit, like fiber.  It is best to stick with water, tea and coffee and to eat your fruit, not drink it.
    •    Low fat vinaigrettes and fat free salad dressings are often “spruced up”with added sugar or corn syrup.  You can whip one up at home with olive oil, lemon juice and spices that will save you loads of calories and provide you with health benefits.
    •    Carbohydrates are converted to sugar quickly in the system.  Things like breads, rice, potatoes and other starchy foods are huge sources of sugar as far as your body is concerned.  If you do not burn it up right away—it becomes fat.
    •    Foods advertising “low fat” or “fat free” such as yogurt are often loaded with extra sugar.  In the case of yogurt, plain yogurt can be doctored up with your favorite toppings such as diced apples and cinnamon.
